Sally Burton wrote: "Looking for some help. I tried to clean a couple of stains on my mattress with bicarbonate and have made it so much worse. Is there anything else I could try? I really don't want to buy a new mattress. Thanks in advance."

For the best results, any mattress stains should be treated immediately as the longer liquids sit in a mattress, the likelier they are to foster mould and mildew growth or cause a permanent spot.

If these stains have set in, the cleaning enthusiasts in the comments section suggested Sally use shaving foam.

Nicola Sarah said: "Shaving foam. I know it sounds weird but it works. Spray on, work in and leave for a while. Then wipe off with a damp cloth."

Karen Riley wrote: "Spray with shaving cream and leave for a few minutes. Then rub it off with a damp cloth. I did this recently and it worked a treat. Use another cloth to remove it after."

Demi Yore commented: "I used shaving foam on my stained mattress and it really surprised me. I had a few small marks from my youngest's bottle spilling and I cleaned it and was left with bad watermarks. This completely took it away."

Miriam Edwards said: "I'd use shaving foam, the cheap sort that only costs £1 in Poundland. I found that it works the best on them even if the mattress stains are stubborn. You only have to leave it on for 10 minutes for it to work."

Frances Grant replied: "My nan had this problem and shaving foam worked a treat. I've also used it and it's great."

It's not just Mrs Hinch fans that recommend using shaving foam works to remove mattress stains, so do the cleaning experts at All Star Steam Cleaning.

They said: "You may be surprised to learn that foaming shave cream is actually one of the best mattress cleaners."

The experts recommend leaving the product to sit on the mattress for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping it away. They added: "This will allow the alcohol in the shaving cream to sink into and attack the stain."

Sally then took to the Facebook post after testing out the shaving foam hack and said that it worked "the first time" and had removed the stains that had "been there for years".
